Mug Up

My camping memories are mostly associated with CGIT. If that doesn’t ring a bell, that was a United Church program for girls in Jr. High and High School. The group I belonged to was 75 girls strong! I remember some of the great activities we enjoyed that helped us build caring community, participate in our congregation, help in the community, and learn valuable leadership skills. Our program year always ended with a highly anticipated camp weekend, where each day’s agenda was not complete without “Mug Up” before bedtime. I’m not sure that hot chocolate and a cookie are the most appropriate snack
before going to bed, but we certainly didn’t ask any questions.

This Sunday is Camping Sunday and we look forward to bringing a camp flavour to our sanctuary. The sheep come into play on the scriptural side of things as we associate the qualities of good leadership with the role of a shepherd. We will be looking at Psalm 23, and the story from the Gospel of John about “the one who enters by the gate” and “is the shepherd of the sheep.” We will even learn a new song that helps us understand the role of a caring shepherd as being like that of a
parent or teacher. It’s hard to find someone who claims to be a shepherd these days, but I do know many awesome parents and teachers who provide for the needs of others in a caring and supportive way.

Perhaps I’ll bring along my sheep mug for “Mug Up” following the service. My reminiscing this week has left me feeling so grateful for all I learned through CGIT camping. I learned about myself, caring for others, caring for creation, and most importantly, I gained valuable leadership skills that helped me be a better teacher and parent . . . and dare I say, minister too.

Peace and joy,
Nancy
