Good-Bye Dog Days
Of Summer

I hope you didn’t blink, because you might have missed it. It’s hard to believe we are saying good-bye to summer already. Next week is Rally Sunday which marks the beginning of another program year at Sunnybrook.

Did you know that the phrase, The Dogs Days of Summer originally came from the star Sirius, the Dog Star. According to AI Overview, “the term ‘dog days’ is derived from the ancient belief that the bright star, Sirius, in the constellation Canis Major
(the greater Dog), was associated with the intense summer heat.” I won’t share that with Axel here, (our grand dog), because he already thinks he is a star! He is a poodle, so what can I say.

As I look back on summer 2025, I am grateful for so many opportunities to learn new things, and to appreciate just being out and about in our beautiful province. After enjoying some time at our family lake cottage (with Mr. Axel) in July, I jumped in to help with United Kids Camp, hosted by Aleesha here at Sunnybrook. Leila Currie (minister at Gaetz) and I always enjoy participating in the storytelling and music time.

August began with a special anniversary camp at Kasota East Camp. Then General Council 45 of the United Church of Canada was hosted in Calgary. I enjoyed helping on the Local Arrangements Committee, especially connecting with the Theme and Worship Committee. This last week of August I attended a conference in Vancouver put on by the Vancouver School of Theology. The theme was Known and Unknown: Ministry Leadership in Liminal Time.

I’m always a bit sad to see summer come to an end, but I also look forward to the change of energy that comes with the turning of the seasons. So, with gratitude for our time in the sun, we move on together to worship, work, and accompany one another on our journeys.

Peace and joy
Nancy
