Earth Day 2026

This Sunday is Earth Sunday in preparation for Earth Day next week, which lands on Wednesday, April 22. I selected this image for this Perk message before the snow came and covered up any thought of spring planting. Such is the springtime
weather in Alberta. At times it feels like one step forward and two steps back.

The theme for Earth Day this year is, “Our Power, Our Planet.” We are being encouraged this year to remember the collective good we do for our planet with all the small things we choose to do. It is easy to be discouraged when there is so much we “should” be doing, but realistically there are only a few things we can do well. The challenge is that the changes we need to make to our lifestyle permeate all aspects of our living: the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the power we use, the cars we drive, and even the vacations we plan. We can easily feel guilty about not doing more.

Instead, let’s honour what we are doing, remembering that we are all doing small things by making healthy, sustainable decisions where we can. Together, our small things continue to add up to something significant. No one person or household is responsible for everything. As I have heard so many times, guilt is highly overrated. It also tends to paralyze us in our tracks, and we end up doing nothing.

Let’s take some time over the next week to consider the health of our planet, and all life that is sustained upon our earth home. In this season of celebrating new life and hope, let’s honour the small things we all do and may we continue to make good decisions to support clean air, clean water, clean soil, and clean energy.

Peace and joy,
Nancy
