Season of
Creation 2025

If you are keeping track of the seasons of the church year, youwill be aware that this weekis the beginning of the Season of Creation. If you grew up in the church, like me, you may be asking, “When did we start acknowledging the Season of Creation?” Good question!

This season is a relatively recent addition to the liturgical calendar. It all started September 1, 1989, when a Day of Prayer for Creation was proclaimed by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. Then the World Council of Churches, of which the United Church of Canada is a member, extended the observance to five weeks, ending on October 4, St. Francis of Assisi’s Day. The rest, shall we say, is history.

The theme for the Season of Creation this year is Peace With Creation, which comes from Isaiah 32:14-18. This prophetic voice links the broken relationships of humans with each other and with God, to the brokenness of creation. The vision is for creation to be rooted in justice and peace. It’s all connected. When we are in right relations with one another, all life will flourish.

This year for the season of creation, I have decided to capture images out on the trails each week and offer one to you in the Weekly Perk. This will be my way of sharing a moment in time – a moment in our own lived experience with creation, as we make our way through this season.

I encourage you to take some intentional time outside during this season, to reconnect with the awe and wisdom of the natural world. We can do that together next week when Leila Currie and I will be offering an outside worship experience called Wild Church. Come join us next Thursday, September 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Coronation Park.

Peace and joy
