Circling Back
to Sunday
It was a wonderful moment on Sunday when this new artwork, Draw the Circle Wide, was revealed to the congregation. Even though Glynis and Paul are very good at diverting attention away from themselves, we all have a lot of gratitude for the hours of work that went into this project initiated by the two of them. From researching names and places, to organizing graveside visits with carnations, to imagining and implementing the details of this artistic expression, Glynis and Paul have
captured this moment in time beautifully.
I love the significance of the circles and the fact that so many hands and hearts are represented here. Circles have no beginning and no end, and they can always expand to make room for more. Circles invite equal give and take from leadership and participants. It’s a beautiful thing when we are all invited to share our colourful gifts in community. As we consider focusing our work this year around the word connection, these circles offer a helpful image for us, connecting with each other inside and outside our sanctuary.
As promised, Sam, Paul, and Glynis arrived this week to install Draw the Circle Wide on the wall in the narthex right beside
the entrance to the sanctuary. It is now a permanent reminder of all the circles we gather in, and of friends and family past and present. It honours our story but also invites us to imagine new circles still to come.
Thank you, Glynis and Paul, for imagining this work, and for everyone who had a hand in creating it. May we continue to
draw our circles wide with colour and diversity, inclusion and acceptance, care and love.
Peace and joy,
Nancy
