Who’s Hungry?

Have you ever asked this question in alighthearted way as you called family to the table? The ability to feed ourselves and our family can be something we take for granted. However, with the cost of food these days, we shouldn’t take anything for granted.

On the serious side, “Who’s hungry?” is the question that grounds the work of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank whose mission it is to end world hunger. That’s no small task considering the shifting variables worldwide that contribute to food insecurity. The United Church of Canada is one of 15 churches and church-based agencies working with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to address this issue on a global scale. There are farmers right here in central Alberta who donate the proceeds of a portion of their fields to the Foodgrains Bank for this work.

Once again during worship this Sunday, Doug Maas of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank will be joining us to tell the story and bring us updates. Doug is always very informative, and I look forward to hearing him speak. I hope you plan to join us for the soup and bun lunch that will follow the service. All proceeds will go to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. Doug is usually gracious enough to hang around with us during lunch and answer any questions we might have.

Perhaps we should be paying more attention to who answers the question, “Who’s hungry?” these days. We would be surprised to discover how many people right here in our own community are experiencing food insecurity right now. Let’s not take anything for granted in these challenging times. Let’s make room at the table for everyone.

Peace and joy,
Nancy
