River Ramblings
There’s something about a river that draws us in and teaches us about life. It is always on the move, constantly changing and
adapting. Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher of the 6th century once said that no one can step into the same river twice. On the second visit, the river has changed, and the person has changed too. From the source of our rivers in the mountains and glaciers, to their final destinations in oceans and bays, our rivers weave together a story of past and present. If we are paying attention, we may even get a hint of what is to come.
Rivers offer life, mystery, and presence. It is no wonder our scriptures and hymns have so many river images that connect us with HolySpirit – Spirit of Life. Check out MV #3 River, and MV 163 River Running in You and Me.
Last week it felt as though our Red Deer River was my companion. I started the week on a lovely walk with Sunnybrook friends that took us down by the riverside. The next day I ventured down the highway, along with many other Diaconal ministers, to Drumheller for our national gathering. Of course, the Red Deer River winds its way through Drumheller too.
The weaving together of past, present, and future was very much a part of our deliberations. I have been thinking about this river that has given life and shape to central Alberta. It continues to shape our lives now, showing us how to change and grow, and sparking the imagination for what is to come.
“River running in you and me,
Spirit of life, deep mystery.”
