Sky
Attractions

Once the September long weekend has come and gone, most of the piers and boats on Lake Wabamun have been taken in, and as my Mum says, the lake is once again given back to the birds. Spending a day at the lake is pretty special, but taking in the night sky from there is even more spectacular. We have treasured a few special nights there this summer, seeing a full array of stars, Northern Lights, and even the Perseid Meteor Shower. All those amazing sky attractions were capped off beautifully last weekend, when this lovely rainbow appeared and seemed to reach across the entire lake.

We are in the Season of Creation, and this week is Sky Sunday. Psalm 19:1-6 is one of the readings for Sky Sunday and offers us a creation hymn declaring, “The heavens are telling the glory of God . . .” Perhaps if you enjoy classical music, you will know that Bach, Beethoven, Handel, and Haydn all wrote musical settings of this text.

There is something about witnessing a rainbow by day, or the stars by night, that keeps us humble and in awe of creation. Perhaps there is something that shifts in our heart when we are inspired by something beyond our comprehension. There is always something more for us to learn and different perspectives for us to consider, when we pause and look up.

This week’s sky attractions included the beautiful Harvest Moon and even more Northern Lights. I hope you have been able to witness some of that in the night sky and be humbled and inspired by the complexities of the universe.

Peace and joy,
Nancy
