Who Do You Say
That I Am?
Finding our way in the world is not always a straight path forward with easy answers to our questions. Sometimes, we may even question whether we are on the right path. Even though we tend to feel most comfortable on a main highway, I’ve learned to appreciate the secondary routes that show me a different perspective, yet still get me to my destination. I’m sure we learn what we are meant to learn no matter what path we are on. Often, we learn more from the side trips that may reveal a hidden or forgotten gem about who we are and how we show up in the world.

This week’s talking point has been about identity. I asked folks to think about how they introduce themselves to others. What parts of your identity do you share with someone you are meeting for the first time? The conversations that followed revealed many aspects of our identity; some change over time, some are tied to where we are from, some are linked to the relationships we are in, travel experiences, the work that we do, or the gifts that we have.

In this week’s Gospel reading, Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” It was important for them to truly understand his identity, how that informed the ways he showed up in the world, his relationship with the divine, and his relationship with them (and us). To be a follower of Christ will most certainly take us off the beaten path and have us contemplating our own identity within the sacred story.

Just when we think we have things figured out, we are invited to go deep under the veneer of how we appear on the surface and consider who we are at the core of our being. There, we will find our spiritual home, our calling, and our identity within the sacred.

Peace and joy,
