Garden Feast


We had some amazing meals while we were away, but nothing compares to fresh veggies out of the garden. Allan pulled a few carrots this week and we had our first garden feast.The beans were a little over ripe, but I’m not complaining.

The Gospel readings we are paying attention to right now have us thinking about the food we consume as a metaphor for what feeds us spiritually. While wonderfully creative restaurant meals are a treat, it’s probably not in our best interest to eat like that all the time. It’s important for us to consider what we consume for the health of our bodies, just as it is important for us to consider the spiritual food that sustains us for the long haul.

The Gospel of John refers to Jesus as “the bread of life.” “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” Jesus, as God’s Word made flesh, offers the bread for the life of the world.

We look forward to a few more garden feasts (it’s a small garden) this season. I think of the vegetables we grow as offering us the staples of a healthy diet. I think of our own personal relationship with the holy as offering the staples of our spiritual lives. That becomes real for us, and is sustained and supported, through all the ways we connect to the life and work of Sunnybrook United. When we gather to worship, or study, or care for one another, or support our community, we are
sharing the bread of life in the world.


I hope you have a chance to enjoy a garden feast this season. May it be a special meal to feed your body and your soul.
