June is Pride Month

There is so much going on in June, but let’s not forget about Pride Month! With our anniversary service on June 16, and our Indigenous service on June 23, I thought this Sunday would be a good opportunity to acknowledge Pride and celebrate the diversity and inclusivity within the United Church of Canada, as well as right here at Sunnybrook.

I am so glad to be in leadership in a church that celebrates all the ways we show up authentically in the world. Sadly, homophobia and transphobia are still present in our communities, causing the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to be at risk. It is
important that we say openly what we believe when we name our worship and programming to be inclusive and affirming. It is our intention to create safe spaces for all people to worship, learn, and serve others together here at Sunnybrook.

Let’s remember that acknowledging Pride is not an “us and them” conversation. This is us. This is a moment to celebrate our differences, remembering we are all made in God’s image in all our uniqueness and with all the gifts we have to share in the world. There are no limits or parameters to God’s love, and we are each an expression of that love as we show up authentically with our families and our friends. While the United Church of Canada celebrates Pride Month in June, here in Central Alberta, Pride Week is August 11-17. That’s something to keep in mind as there will be local
events later in the summer.

Peace and joy,
Nancy
