The Wonders of
Others
We are sometimes unaware of how we touch the lives of others, by simple acts of kindness that show our true nature.
At our lake cottage this past weekend, our neighbour’s dog went missing. We all jumped into action to help with the search up and down the small roads around us. I was so amazed at how this small missing dog quickly brought together a whole community of people helping each other. Our search left us empty handed and we weren’t sure what to do next, but our six-year-old granddaughter was clearly not ready to give up. What can a six-year-old do when all the adults clearly failed? Well, she loves to draw, so she got busy creating little signs complete with her own picture of the dog. She convinced me to help her post all her signs throughout the neighbourhood. There is a happy ending to the story. All the connections we all made with our neighbours paid off. The dog was found, and all was well. What an incredible experience of people helping people, and of course, our amazing granddaughter who offered her gift, and never gave up.
This week we continue to explore our summer theme of “sanctuary” through the lens of awe and wonder – moments that pull us out of our own little perspective to discover a larger understanding of the world. In worship, I will focus on the chapter from Dacher Keltner’s book, Awe, that is about moral beauty, or how the kindness, and courage of others inspires awe. I wonder where you have witnessed the kindness and courage of others, and if that experience took you to a moment of awe. I wonder when you have touched the lives of others.
Peace and joy,
Nancy
