The Spirit of the
Journey
I am wondering how your summertime journeys are going so far. I was able to sneak in a morning coffee at our family lake cottage! I am always grateful for this privilege. Listening to the birds reclaim thelake after a busy weekend is wonderful.
Taking the time to do our own reconnection with the natural world is also wonderful and so important. Wherever I roam throughout these weeks of summer I will be paying special attention tothese moments of re-connection.
Our gospel reading for this week is a very familiar one – the parable of the Good Samaritan. This is a great story for our The Spirit of the Journey musings. A lawyer asks questions that prompt Jesus to share this story about compassion, eternal life, and what it means to be a neighbour. They all seem to be on a journey of sorts. Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem, and the lawyer seems to be on a quest for meaning and purpose in his life. In the parable, a man is journeying from Jerusalem to Jericho which was typically a dangerous route. The priest and the Levite were on their own journey which required them to maintain “purity” for worship. The Samaritan, also journeying on the same road, demonstrates compassion that crosses typical cultural boundaries.
This parable gives us a glimpse of what it means to know eternal life right here and now on our everyday journey through life. It’s all about living our lives with compassion towards others, and treating everyone as our neighbour, no matter what dangerous roads we may be traveling in life. “Each day a lesson in love’s sweet journey.” (N.C.)
Peace and joy,
