This week, I’ve been thinking about the Psalm that was written during the Babylonian exile, in which the people of Israel questioned “How can we sing the Lord’s Song in a strange land.” It seems like a psalm for our times. In this strange land of pandemic, social distancing, of dangerous viruses, in which we are having to keep our distance, and stay home, in which our routines are disrupted, and so many of the things that give our lives meaning and bring us joy have been taken away – in this strange land, how can we sing the Lord’s song? If singing symbolizes all that is best in life, a thriving life, a full human life, how can we sing the Lord’s Song in this strange land?
