To follow Christ is a costly business. To approach God like a consumer is to fashion an idol every bit as crude as the golden calf. God doesn’t change because we prefer an idol of our own making. Truth doesn’t change because we don’t like it. Injustice doesn’t become fair just because it is more convenient. Slavery doesn’t become freedom just because we call it by a new name. God isn’t supposed to fit us; we are supposed to change to fit God. We are supposed to continually evaluate our lives against the standard of God’s love and justice, abandon anything unworthy of that, and allow ourselves to be remade on a foundation of truth.
